Yachts are usually much larger than sailboats. This makes it an excellent choice for people that plan on having a large party or group of people on their boating days. While most sailboats have the capability of having guests, they will not have nearly the same amount of space as a motor-powered yacht. 

Perhaps the most obvious difference between a yacht and a sailboat is the fact that powerboats require fuel to function, while sailboats only require wind. This also means that using a yacht is more expensive than a sailboat. When coupled with the price that comes with purchasing and maintaining a large yacht, the sailboat is usually a cheaper option. 

Another key difference when it comes to sailboats vs. powerboats is the materials that the ships are made from. Sailboats are usually constructed with wood or fiberglass, while a yacht is usually made with a combination of fiberglass, carbon fiber, and titanium. The materials that sailboats are made from are much easier to repair than those that make up a yacht.
